IVF

The journey to conceive can be emotional, especially if it has been a struggle. In vitro fertilization (IVF) can benefit patients who have been unsuccessful with other methods of assisted reproductive technology. Learn how Dr. Louis R. Manara and Dr. Michael Dougherty in Voorhees, NJ, can help you grow your family through IVF.

What Is IVF?

In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART). During IVF, an egg is fertilized in the lab with a single sperm. The fertilized egg is given time to mature in the lab and the resulting embryo is then transferred to the uterus of the mother or surrogate.

Who Can Benefit from IVF?

In vitro fertilization is an assisted reproductive technology recommended to patients struggling with issues such as:

In Vitro Fertilization Treatment Timeline

It is important to remember that IVF at our Voorhees fertility clinic is highly personalized, so your treatment timeline may differ. However, a typical IVF cycle involves:

Baseline Testing

Your IVF cycle begins on day one of your menstrual cycle. You will undergo some blood work to check your hormone levels, as well as ultrasounds to check your ovaries and uterine lining.

Begin Medication

Based on your initial tests, your doctor will prescribe medications. This is monitored and adjusted as your cycle progresses.

Ovarian Stimulation

For about 10 days, you will take medication to stimulate the ovaries. This helps produce mature eggs to be collected later in the cycle.

Trigger Shot

Once your follicles are mature, you will take a "trigger shot" of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to induce ovulation.

Semen Processing

A partner or sperm donor will provide sperm. This allows us to choose healthy sperm to fertilize your eggs after the egg retrieval.

Egg Retrieval

During this short procedure, your doctor will collect your eggs using a thin need and gentle suction.

Fertilization and Evaluation

Our fertility team will fertilize your eggs with sperm. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) allows our team to directly inject a healthy sperm into the egg or several sperm can be placed in the dish with the eggs and fertilized traditionally. The fertilized eggs are then monitored for growth. When they are ready, we will perform an embryo transfer.

Embryo Transfer

After about five days, the developing embryo is transferred into your uterus or to the uterus of the surrogate. If the embryo transfer is successful, the developing embryo will implant in the mother or surrogate's uterus.

Pregnancy Test

About 14 days after your embryo transfer, we will perform a blood test to identify a successful pregnancy. If it is positive, we will take another test in a few days to ensure your hCG levels are rising properly.

Have questions about the IVF timeline?

What Is the Success Rate of IVF?

Advancements in assisted reproductive technology mean more people than ever can achieve their dreams of a successful pregnancy. However, your chances of success depend on a number of factors, including your age, your health, the cause of infertility, previous pregnancies, and more. The CDC has developed a success rate estimator that can give you an idea of your chances of conception using IVF.

My wife and I had trouble getting and staying pregnant. We had been through two other doctors before a friend recommended Dr. Manara. Now, we are expecting twins—and we didn’t even have to go through IVF at this practice. The results speak for themselves.

Egg Retrieval Facts

  • Before the procedure begins at our New Jersey fertility clinic, you will be given a mild sedative by our licensed nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), and your vitals are monitored throughout the procedure.
  • Using intra-vaginal ultrasound to guide him, your doctor will pass a needle through the vaginal wall and into the ovary to complete the egg retrieval. Each of the follicles containing the eggs may be aspirated using gentle, carefully monitored suction.
  • The entire egg removal procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. You will be monitored for about an hour as the medication wears off.
  • You will then be discharged to rest at home. Most patients return to normal activities the following day. Using traditional methods or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), your eggs will be fertilized and monitored for growth.
